+++ Women are more modest than men
+++ Highest loan amounts between 40 and 49 years

Heidelberg. No other population group asks for credit online as often as young men between the ages of 18 and 29. Their share of credit requests is 164 percent higher than their share of the total adult population. This is shown by an evaluation of Verivox tariff experts.

Young people often want loans, but lower sums

The young men account for just under a tenth of the total adult population. On the other hand, they ask Verivox more than every 5th loan. Even among women, 18 to 29 year olds most often need a loan.

But the loan request often does not lead to the contract. Some of the 18 to 29 year olds do not receive a loan offer from the bank, while others do not accept the offers. For the contracts concluded, this age group is even underrepresented. Men graduate from 30 to 39 in credit. They receive one in five loans, even though they make up only 7.3 percent of the adult population.

From 60 years, only a few loans are requested. Seniors can rely on savings rather than borrowing money for their purchases. Nevertheless, at least 6 percent of all borrowers at Verivox are between 60 and 70, two percent even over 70. With sufficient creditworthiness, banks also make senior credit offers. “It’s a myth that retirees do not get credit,” says Christoph Jennen, managing director at Verivox.

Loans are a male domain

Two thirds of all loans are requested by men. But women are not only less likely to apply for a loan, they also have lower sums. On average, men ask for 28 percent higher loan amounts. Particularly big is the difference with 3,484 euros in the group of 40- to 49-year-olds.

The credit sums rise with age

This group asks by far the highest sums – on average 14.285 euros. This is 80 percent more than the 18 to 29-year-olds (7,937 euros). The average loan amount requested is 11,511 euros.

How strong the interest rate on the credit, shows a model calculation: Who accepts the average sum for 6 years, can save at a cheap bank 1,440 euros – compared to the banking average. Offers for middle-rated customers were compared.

methodology

The analysis included all loans that were requested from July 2016 to June 2017 via the Verivox installment credit comparison.
